New year days celebration at Fort Kochi is a long-time traditional way to welcome another year named ‘The Cochin Carnival ‘. As it’s a traditional celebration, most of them will be same except the theme which will be different and always keeping its freshness.

                 Cochin carnival was started by a group of youth in 1984 after the declaration of international youth year by United nations. Ever since then, Cochin carnival is happening every year except in 2004 and 2006, its partially called off due to Tsunami hit in Kerala coast and when Saddam Hussein was killed. In 2021, the whole programs called off due to COVID-19 pandemic situation.

Papanhi

Burning the giant statue of an old man that stands at tall amidst the crowd exactly at midnight of 31st signifies the end of a passing year and welcome New Year. In other words, good bye to the past year and welcoming New year. Most houses at Fort Kochi may build small papanhi to conduct to say goodbye to past year. Other than this, DJ, Dance, Music shows etc. would be there. Cochin carnival will start 2 weeks prior to New Year with Christmas days. Ends on January 1st with Carnival rally. Try and feel it…
